What is Platelet Rich Fibrin and how does it work?

Platelet Rich Fibrin is a concentrated healing material created from your own blood. We draw a small blood sample and process it in a special centrifuge that separates the platelets, white blood cells, fibrin, and growth factors from red blood cells. This concentrated mixture contains powerful healing components that stimulate tissue regeneration and accelerate recovery. When we place PRF in surgical sites like extraction sockets or areas receiving bone grafts, it releases growth factors gradually over several days, creating an optimal healing environment. Because PRF comes from your own blood, there’s no risk of allergic reactions or disease transmission.

What procedures benefit most from PRF treatment?

Wisdom teeth removal shows particularly dramatic benefits from PRF, with patients experiencing less swelling, reduced pain, and faster healing. Dental implant surgery benefits from PRF’s ability to promote bone integration and soft tissue healing around implants. Bone grafting procedures heal more predictably when PRF is mixed with graft material or placed over the surgical site. Will PRF make my recovery completely pain-free?

PRF significantly reduces post-operative discomfort but doesn’t eliminate it entirely. Most patients who receive PRF report notably less pain compared to previous surgeries without it or compared to what they expected based on others’ experiences. You’ll still need some pain medication for the first few days, but typically require less medication for a shorter duration than patients not receiving PRF. The reduction in swelling is often more dramatic than pain reduction, with some patients experiencing minimal facial puffiness. PRF helps you return to normal activities faster, but you’ll still need to follow post-operative restrictions and take recovery seriously.

Does PRF prevent dry socket after tooth extraction?

PRF substantially reduces dry socket risk, though it doesn’t guarantee complete prevention. Dry socket occurs when the blood clot in an extraction site dislodges or dissolves prematurely, exposing bone and causing severe pain. The fibrin matrix in PRF creates a stable, protected healing environment that’s less likely to become dislodged than a regular blood clot. PRF also releases factors that reduce inflammation and infection risk, both contributors to dry socket development. However, you still need to avoid straws, smoking, and aggressive rinsing since these activities can disrupt even PRF-protected sites. Think of PRF as excellent insurance against dry socket, not absolute protection.

Is there any additional cost for PRF treatment?

PRF typically involves an additional fee beyond the cost of your surgery, though the amount varies by practice and the extent of PRF use. Many patients consider the expense worthwhile given the reduced discomfort, faster recovery, and quicker return to normal activities. Some dental insurance plans cover PRF when used with covered procedures like wisdom teeth removal or dental implants, though coverage isn’t guaranteed. We’ll provide clear cost information during your consultation so you can make an informed decision. Many patients who initially decline PRF due to cost choose to add it at subsequent procedures after hearing positive experiences from others.

Are there any risks or side effects from PRF?

PRF is exceptionally safe since it comes entirely from your own blood with no additives or foreign materials. The most common “side effect” is actually a benefit; improved healing and reduced complications. Some patients feel slightly lightheaded when we draw blood, but this passes quickly. There’s no risk of allergic reaction, disease transmission, or rejection since we’re using your body’s own healing factors. The centrifuge process is standardized and reliable. Very rarely, patients might experience delayed healing if their blood has certain medical conditions affecting platelet function, but we screen for these factors during your medical history review.

How is PRF prepared and applied during surgery?

We draw a small amount of blood from your arm immediately before or during your surgical procedure. The blood goes into a specialized centrifuge that spins at precise speeds for about 10 minutes, separating it into distinct layers. We extract the PRF layer, which appears as a yellowish gel or membrane depending on processing. For extraction sites, we place PRF directly into the socket. For implants or bone grafts, we may mix PRF with graft material or place it as a protective membrane over the surgical site. The entire preparation happens while you’re under sedation, so you won’t experience any delays or discomfort related to PRF processing.

Can everyone receive PRF treatment?

Most patients are excellent candidates for PRF, but certain medical conditions may affect eligibility. Patients taking blood thinners might have altered platelet function affecting PRF quality. Certain blood disorders or cancers affecting blood cells may preclude PRF use. Active infections could potentially be concentrated in PRF, though this is rare. Severe anemia might limit our ability to draw adequate blood. The vast majority of patients can safely benefit from this treatment.

How much improvement can I expect with PRF versus without it?

Healing time often decreases by several days, allowing faster return to normal diet and activities. Complication rates, particularly dry socket after extractions, drop significantly. Most patients notice the most dramatic difference in reduced swelling and faster resolution of soreness. While we can’t guarantee specific results, the overwhelming majority of patients who’ve experienced both types of recovery strongly prefer surgery with PRF enhancement.

I can’t say enough good things about this place. I originally made an appointment for both myself and my child. For me, I’ve had ongoing jaw pain and was thinking I might need my wisdom teeth removed. The dentist did a full evaluation and told me that my wisdom teeth are perfectly healthy, coming in straight, and don’t need to be removed. He explained that my pain is likely from strong jaw muscles and suggested a mouth guard instead. That honesty meant so much to me because I’ve had several dentists in the past try to push wisdom teeth removal “just because.” It was refreshing to finally meet a dentist who put my health first instead of recommending an unnecessary procedure. As for my child, he had a tongue-tie procedure done today, and the entire staff was absolutely wonderful. They were so patient, kind, and genuinely caring. One woman in particular showed such warmth and compassion that it almost felt like she was his own mom. The surgery itself was quick and smooth, and he bounced back immediately. He was up and playing as soon as we got home. The honesty, professionalism, and compassion we experienced here were above and beyond. I was so impressed that I went ahead and scheduled another family member for an appointment. Highly recommend!

I just experienced my first surgery ever today here and was super anxious about the whole situation, especially the anesthesia part. I really appreciated Dr. Bhatti and all the nurses involved for being very patient and understanding and giving me a second. The anesthesia was not painful or scary like I initially thought it would be and I had an easy time waking up and it didn’t feel like the videos you normally see where patients are completely out of it. It was a seamless process and I’ve already stopped bleeding and working towards recovery.

The dentist did a full evaluation and told me that my wisdom teeth are perfectly healthy, coming in straight, and don’t need to be removed. He explained that my pain is likely from strong jaw muscles and suggested a mouth guard instead. That honesty meant so much to me because I’ve had several dentists in the past try to push wisdom teeth removal “just because.” It was refreshing to finally meet a dentist who put my health first instead of recommending an unnecessary procedure. As for my child, he had a tongue-tie procedure done today, and the entire staff was absolutely wonderful. They were so patient, kind, and genuinely caring. One woman in particular showed such warmth and compassion that it almost felt like she was his own mom. The surgery itself was quick and smooth, and he bounced back immediately. He was up and playing as soon as we got home. The honesty, professionalism, and compassion we experienced here were above and beyond. I was so impressed that I went ahead and scheduled another family member for an appointment. Highly recommend!

I was in here for wisdom teeth removal and was extremely satisfied with the entire experience. Dr. Haron and his team were wonderful! The level of skill and dedication Dr. Haron has is very evident as well as a high degree of compassion towards his clients. They squeezed me in same day for an emergency extraction. From the time I walked in to the time I left I was treated like family, and money was not even mentioned until I got home and had time to rest. This is the friendliest and most helpful oral surgeon I have been to.

I just experienced my first surgery ever today here and was super anxious about the whole situation, especially the anesthesia part. I really appreciated Dr. Bhatti and all the nurses involved for being very patient and understanding and giving me a second. The anesthesia was not painful or scary like I initially thought it would be and I had an easy time waking up and it didn’t feel like the videos you normally see where patients are completely out of it. It was a seamless process and I’ve already stopped bleeding and working towards recovery.

My daughter recently had all four wisdom teeth removed here at the Manassas location, and the entire experience was outstanding from start to finish. The front desk staff were so helpful in working with me to schedule the appointment, and every person we interacted with in the office was kind, welcoming, and patient. The staff assisting the doctor were incredibly comforting—explaining each step clearly, answering all of our questions, and even helping my daughter to the car afterward. The doctor was professional, thorough, and made us feel completely at ease throughout the process. The practice is impressively efficient, but never at the expense of patient care or compassion. We are so grateful for the excellent care we received and highly recommend this office.
