General anesthesia renders you completely unconscious and is used rarely for extremely complex cases or special needs patients. We’ll discuss which option best suits your situation during consultation.

What's the difference between IV sedation and general anesthesia?

IV sedation, also called conscious sedation, keeps you in a twilight state where you’re extremely relaxed and may doze but can respond to verbal cues. Most patients have no memory of the procedure. You breathe on your own and maintain protective reflexes. Recovery is relatively quick, usually 30 to 60 minutes. General anesthesia renders you completely unconscious with no response to stimulation. You require breathing support and continuous monitoring. Recovery takes longer and requires more extensive medical oversight. For oral surgery, IV sedation provides excellent comfort with fewer risks and faster recovery than general anesthesia. We reserve general anesthesia for lengthy complex procedures or patients with special medical needs.

How safe is IV sedation?

IV sedation is extremely safe when administered by trained oral surgeons like our team. Our surgeons completed extensive anesthesia training during their residency programs, learning to manage even complex medical situations. We continuously monitor your vital signs including heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels, and breathing throughout the procedure. Modern monitoring equipment alerts us immediately to any changes requiring attention. We maintain emergency medications and equipment in our surgical suites. Serious complications are exceptionally rare. The most common side effects are mild nausea or grogginess that resolve quickly. We screen your medical history carefully to identify any factors affecting sedation safety.

Will I remember my surgery?

With IV sedation, most patients have little to no memory of their procedure. You may have vague awareness of the experience but typically can’t recall specific details. This amnesia effect is actually beneficial, preventing anxiety about dental procedures. Some patients remember brief moments like arriving or leaving the surgical suite but nothing uncomfortable. With nitrous oxide or oral sedation, you’ll remember more of the experience, though you’ll feel relaxed and less anxious than without sedation. Local anesthesia alone means you’ll remember everything, though you won’t feel pain. Many patients prefer IV sedation specifically because the memory loss makes the experience stress-free.

Can anyone receive IV sedation?

Most healthy patients are excellent candidates for IV sedation, but certain medical conditions require extra caution or preclude sedation. We carefully screen for heart problems, lung disease, sleep apnea, medication allergies, and other conditions affecting sedation safety. Pregnancy contraindicates elective sedation procedures. Some medications interact with sedation drugs, requiring adjustments or alternative approaches. Obesity and certain airway anatomy increase sedation risks slightly but don’t automatically disqualify you. During your consultation, we’ll review your complete medical history, current medications, and any previous anesthesia experiences to determine if IV sedation is safe and appropriate for you.

How should I prepare for IV sedation?

You must fast for at least 6 hours before surgery—no food, drinks, gum, or candy. An empty stomach reduces nausea risk and ensures your safety. Take only medications we specifically approve with a tiny sip of water. Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you for several hours after surgery since sedation medications impair judgment and coordination. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing with short sleeves for easy IV access. Remove contact lenses, jewelry, and nail polish. Don’t wear makeup or heavy moisturizers. Arrive with clean teeth. We’ll provide detailed written instructions when scheduling your procedure.

What does it feel like to be under IV sedation?

Most patients describe IV sedation as extremely relaxing and pleasant. You’ll feel drowsy and peaceful, drifting in and out of light sleep. Time seems to pass very quickly—patients often express surprise when told their procedure is complete, feeling like just minutes passed. You won’t feel pain or discomfort. Some patients report feeling disconnected from what’s happening, aware of activity but not bothered by it. The sensation is different from natural sleep—more like a very relaxed, comfortable twilight state. You may mumble responses to our questions but won’t form coherent conversation. The experience is consistently described as stress-free and comfortable.

How long does it take to recover from sedation?

Initial recovery in our office takes 30 to 60 minutes as sedation effects begin wearing off. You’ll feel groggy but increasingly alert. We monitor your vital signs until you’re stable enough to leave with your driver. Effects continue diminishing over the next few hours at home. Plan to rest for the remainder of the day—no work, important decisions, driving, or operating machinery for 24 hours. Most patients feel normal by the following morning, though some grogginess may linger. Your judgment and reflexes remain impaired longer than you realize, which is why driving restrictions are absolute. The surgical site will be sore, but that’s separate from sedation effects.

Can I drive myself home after nitrous oxide sedation?

Nitrous oxide is the only sedation type after which you can legally drive. The gas leaves your system within 5 to 10 minutes after we turn it off. We administer pure oxygen briefly to help clear any remaining nitrous oxide from your lungs. You’ll feel completely alert and capable of driving safely. However, the surgical procedure itself may leave you uncomfortable or shaken, so having someone drive you might still be preferable even though it’s not medically required. All other sedation types—oral sedation, IV sedation, and general anesthesia—absolutely require a driver for your safety and legal liability reasons.

Does dental insurance cover sedation?

Coverage varies significantly by insurance plan and procedure type. Many plans cover sedation when medically necessary for complex surgeries like wisdom teeth removal or dental implant placement. Some plans specifically exclude sedation coverage, considering it optional comfort rather than medical necessity. Plans may cover local anesthesia and nitrous oxide but not IV sedation. Patients with documented dental anxiety or special needs sometimes get sedation covered when others don’t. We’ll verify your coverage before your procedure and provide clear cost information. This particular office in Fairfax in Fairfax Corner goes above and beyond everybody there doctors and nurses the assistance everybody in this office is phenomenal I love each and every one of them from anytime that I’m crying because I’m going through a bad day they sit and listen they make me feel a lot better they make me feel beautiful they helped me become beautiful I was so insecure about my teeth and about my smile I would always hide it now I smile more than I’ve ever smiled in my life I came here looking for a better smile and I came out with so much more than that, I came out of here with confidence, I came out here with not just a team but family and most importantly I came out of here loving myself again , I truly myself again and I couldn’t thank them enough they work hard and understand needs even though things seem impossible they find a way to make it possible. I know I was not very easy client of theirs I know I was a big challenge but they never gave up they worked hard day and night to make sure that I got exactly what I wanted out of this office. I had an excellent experience at this oral surgery office. Dr. Bhatti was incredibly professional, caring, and took the time to clearly explain my procedure so I felt comfortable and informed. Ashley was very supportive throughout the process, making sure I was at ease and answering all of my questions with patience and care. Pedro at the front desk was also fantastic friendly, organized, and efficient in helping me with scheduling and paperwork.

I can’t say enough good things about this place. I originally made an appointment for both myself and my child. For me, I’ve had ongoing jaw pain and was thinking I might need my wisdom teeth removed. The dentist did a full evaluation and told me that my wisdom teeth are perfectly healthy, coming in straight, and don’t need to be removed. He explained that my pain is likely from strong jaw muscles and suggested a mouth guard instead. That honesty meant so much to me because I’ve had several dentists in the past try to push wisdom teeth removal “just because.” It was refreshing to finally meet a dentist who put my health first instead of recommending an unnecessary procedure. As for my child, he had a tongue-tie procedure done today, and the entire staff was absolutely wonderful. They were so patient, kind, and genuinely caring. One woman in particular showed such warmth and compassion that it almost felt like she was his own mom. The surgery itself was quick and smooth, and he bounced back immediately. He was up and playing as soon as we got home. The honesty, professionalism, and compassion we experienced here were above and beyond. I was so impressed that I went ahead and scheduled another family member for an appointment. Highly recommend!

I just experienced my first surgery ever today here and was super anxious about the whole situation, especially the anesthesia part. I really appreciated Dr. Bhatti and all the nurses involved for being very patient and understanding and giving me a second. The anesthesia was not painful or scary like I initially thought it would be and I had an easy time waking up and it didn’t feel like the videos you normally see where patients are completely out of it. It was a seamless process and I’ve already stopped bleeding and working towards recovery.
