What materials are used in bone grafting procedures?

We use several types of bone grafting materials depending on your specific needs. Autografts use your own bone harvested from another area of your jaw or body, offering excellent integration since it’s your natural tissue. Allografts come from human donor tissue that’s been thoroughly processed and sterilized for safety. Xenografts use bone material from animal sources, typically bovine, which has been treated to remove all organic material while retaining the mineral structure. Synthetic bone grafts use laboratory-created materials designed to mimic natural bone properties. We’ll recommend the best option based on the amount of bone needed, the location being treated, and your individual health considerations.

How long does it take for bone grafts to heal?

The grafted bone typically needs three to six months to integrate fully with your existing jawbone before we can place dental implants. During this period, new bone cells gradually grow into the graft material, creating a solid foundation. Minor grafts performed at the same time as tooth extraction may heal in three to four months, while extensive grafts requiring significant bone volume can take six months or longer. You won’t feel this healing process happening, though we’ll schedule periodic check-ups to monitor your progress. The waiting period is crucial for implant success, as rushing into implant placement before complete integration significantly increases the risk of implant failure.

Will bone grafting hurt?

The procedure itself won’t hurt because we thoroughly numb the area with local anesthesia and offer sedation options for your comfort. After surgery, you’ll experience some soreness and swelling for three to five days, similar to tooth extraction recovery. Most patients manage post-operative discomfort effectively with prescribed pain medication. The level of discomfort depends on the graft’s size and location, with minor grafts causing minimal soreness and extensive grafts requiring stronger pain management initially. Swelling typically peaks on day two or three, then gradually improves. Many patients are pleasantly surprised that recovery is more comfortable than they anticipated.

What is a sinus lift and when is it necessary?

A sinus lift, also called sinus augmentation, adds bone to your upper jaw in the area of your molars and premolars. We perform this procedure when the sinus cavity has expanded or when natural bone loss has occurred, leaving insufficient height for dental implant placement. During the procedure, we gently lift the sinus membrane and place bone graft material in the space created, effectively raising the sinus floor and increasing available bone height. This allows successful implant placement in the upper back jaw where bone is often limited. Sinus lifts are among the most common bone grafting procedures and have excellent success rates when performed by experienced oral surgeons.

Can bone grafting be done at the same time as tooth extraction?

Yes, we frequently perform ridge preservation bone grafting immediately after tooth extraction to minimize bone loss. When we extract a tooth, the socket begins healing by filling with soft tissue rather than bone, which leads to significant bone loss over time. Placing graft material in the fresh extraction socket preserves the bone volume and maintains the ridge shape, making future implant placement much easier. This approach is particularly beneficial if you’re planning dental implants but aren’t ready to place them immediately. The grafted socket heals over three to four months, maintaining adequate bone structure for successful implant treatment when you’re ready to proceed.

What should I avoid after bone grafting surgery?

Avoid disturbing the surgical area for at least two weeks, which means no touching with your fingers or tongue, no vigorous rinsing, and no drinking through straws. The suction from straws can dislodge the graft material before it integrates. Don’t smoke or use tobacco products, as nicotine severely compromises healing and graft success rates. Stick with soft foods and avoid chewing on the grafted side for several weeks. Skip strenuous exercise for the first week since increased blood pressure can cause bleeding. I can’t say enough good things about this place. I originally made an appointment for both myself and my child. For me, I’ve had ongoing jaw pain and was thinking I might need my wisdom teeth removed. The dentist did a full evaluation and told me that my wisdom teeth are perfectly healthy, coming in straight, and don’t need to be removed. He explained that my pain is likely from strong jaw muscles and suggested a mouth guard instead. That honesty meant so much to me because I’ve had several dentists in the past try to push wisdom teeth removal “just because.” It was refreshing to finally meet a dentist who put my health first instead of recommending an unnecessary procedure. As for my child, he had a tongue-tie procedure done today, and the entire staff was absolutely wonderful. They were so patient, kind, and genuinely caring. One woman in particular showed such warmth and compassion that it almost felt like she was his own mom. The surgery itself was quick and smooth, and he bounced back immediately. He was up and playing as soon as we got home. The honesty, professionalism, and compassion we experienced here were above and beyond. I was so impressed that I went ahead and scheduled another family member for an appointment. Highly recommend!

They squeezed me in same day for an emergency extraction. From the time I walked in to the time I left I was treated like family, and money was not even mentioned until I got home and had time to rest. This is the friendliest and most helpful oral surgeon I have been to.

FELLAS THIS IS THE PLACE TO BE FOR SERVICE. THE ENTIRE STAFF IS PERFECTLY HAND PICKED TO MAKE SURE YOUR APPOINTMENT GOES WELL. BTW YOU MIGHT NOT WANT TO GO BACK TO YOUR ORIGINAL DOCTOR. YES I SAID IT. COME SEE FOR YOUR SELF.

I just experienced my first surgery ever today here and was super anxious about the whole situation, especially the anesthesia part. I really appreciated Dr. Bhatti and all the nurses involved for being very patient and understanding and giving me a second. The anesthesia was not painful or scary like I initially thought it would be and I had an easy time waking up and it didn’t feel like the videos you normally see where patients are completely out of it. It was a seamless process and I’ve already stopped bleeding and working towards recovery.

My daughter recently had all four wisdom teeth removed here at the Manassas location, and the entire experience was outstanding from start to finish. The front desk staff were so helpful in working with me to schedule the appointment, and every person we interacted with in the office was kind, welcoming, and patient. The staff assisting the doctor were incredibly comforting—explaining each step clearly, answering all of our questions, and even helping my daughter to the car afterward. The doctor was professional, thorough, and made us feel completely at ease throughout the process. The practice is impressively efficient, but never at the expense of patient care or compassion. We are so grateful for the excellent care we received and highly recommend this office.
