Complete Your Smile with Beautiful Zirconia Fixed Bridges
Missing a tooth or two? A removable partial isn’t your only option. A zirconia fixed bridge stays in your mouth permanently and looks like your own teeth — no clasps, no taking it out at night, none of that. At Greater Washington Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, we design and place custom zirconia bridges for patients all over Northern Virginia, with offices in Fairfax and Manassas, plus Fredericksburg and Stafford. Below we get into how a fixed zirconia bridge actually works, who it’s right for, what the zirconia fixed bridge procedure looks like step by step, and what it tends to cost.

What is a zirconia fixed bridge, really? It’s a fixed restoration — you’ll also see it called a fixed bridge zirconia or zirconia crown fixed bridge — that fills in one or more missing teeth with a piece that’s custom-milled and then cemented or screwed in for good. It doesn’t come out. Two crowns, called retainers, sit on the teeth or implants at either end of the gap, and an artificial tooth (a pontic) bridges the space between them.
The thing that sets zirconia apart is that the whole piece, top to bottom, is milled from one solid block of tooth-colored ceramic using digital design. Older bridges often had a metal frame underneath the porcelain — with zirconia, there’s nothing metal to show through at the gumline, and the material itself holds up fine under normal biting and chewing.

We don’t use the old gooey putty impressions anymore. Our Fairfax and Manassas offices, along with Fredericksburg and Stafford, scan your teeth digitally instead. The scanner captures a detailed 3D image of your prepared teeth, and that file goes straight to the lab. From there, CAD software builds the bridge to match your bite exactly, and a milling machine cuts it from a solid block of zirconia. It’s a more accurate process, it’s faster, and you’ll likely need fewer adjustments when the bridge is delivered — which is also part of how we’re able to offer same-day crowns in some cases. Because there’s less room for lab error with digital scanning, your digital zirconia fixed bridge price tends to stay more predictable too, from the first visit to the last.
A Simple Path to a Stronger Smile
If most or all of an arch is missing, a zirconia fixed implant bridge — or for a full arch, fixed zirconia implant bridges — anchors onto dental implants rather than natural teeth. That means we don’t have to touch any healthy teeth at all, and it actually helps keep your jawbone from shrinking, since implants stimulate bone the same way tooth roots naturally do. This route usually comes up when there just aren’t good natural teeth on either side of the gap to support a regular bridge.
Everyone wants to know: how much does a zirconia fixed bridge cost? Search it however you like — price of a zirconia fixed bridge, zirconia fixed bridge price — the honest answer is “it depends.” Number of teeth being replaced, whether it’s tooth-supported or implant-supported, and where you’re being treated all factor in. Nationally, a standard three-unit bridge (one missing tooth) usually lands somewhere around $2,500 to $4,500 per unit, and larger spans or implant-supported bridges cost more than that.
Insurance usually treats a bridge as a “major service,” and how much gets covered really varies by plan. Before you start anything, we’ll walk you through every CDT code involved in writing, so there’s nothing you’re guessing about later — and if you need it, we offer financing through CareCredit and Cherry
Dental implements
This one’s quicker and involves a lot less — no incision, no implant, no long stretch of healing to sit through. It usually makes the most sense when the teeth on either side of the gap already need crowns or have big fillings anyway, since prepping them for a bridge isn’t really costing you anything extra at that point. Start to finish, you’re typically looking at two visits over a couple weeks. The trade-off is that those neighboring teeth do get reshaped to hold the retainer crowns, and since the bridge sits on natural teeth rather than in the bone, it’s not doing anything to stimulate the jaw underneath the gap — so some bone loss there is still possible over time, even with the bridge working fine up top.
Takes longer to get to the finish line, but it’s doing something different — replacing the actual root, not just the visible tooth. Because it goes straight into the jawbone, it keeps stimulating that bone the way a natural root would, which helps hold onto jaw density and facial structure long-term. Neighboring teeth stay completely untouched — nothing gets reshaped or ground down. The catch is time: three to six months for the implant to fuse with the bone before a final crown even goes on, plus a surgical step with its own short recovery. If there’s no good neighboring tooth to anchor a bridge to, or you’d rather not touch healthy teeth at all, implants usually end up being the better call long-term.

Frequently Asked Questions
It’s a restoration made from zirconium dioxide ceramic that’s permanently cemented or screwed in place, replacing one or more missing teeth with crowns on the supporting teeth and an artificial tooth filling the gap between them.
Nationally, a typical three-unit bridge runs about $2,500 to $4,500 for one missing tooth — bigger spans or implant-supported bridges cost more. It comes down to how many units you need, whether implants are involved, and your surgeon’s fees. Come in for a consultation at Fairfax or Manassas and we’ll give you an exact number.
Zirconia holds up better and resists staining more than porcelain-fused-to-metal, and you won’t get that dark metal line at the gum. Porcelain usually costs less though, so it often comes down to budget, where the tooth is, and how hard you bite.
E.max looks great — really translucent — and works well for shorter bridges toward the front of your mouth. Zirconia is the tougher option, better suited for longer spans or back teeth doing the heavy lifting when you chew.
We do — Fairfax and Manassas offices, plus Fredericksburg and Stafford. Request an appointment and we’ll get you set up at whichever location works best for you.
