We want your procedure to go as smoothly and safely as possible. IV sedation allows you to remain comfortable and relaxed throughout your surgery, and following these preparation guidelines helps us provide the best care. Please read through each step carefully, and watch the short video below for a quick overview.
Before Your Surgery Date: Getting Ready
Sharing Your Medical History
Providing our team with complete medical information is essential for your safety during sedation. Please share the following with our office before your scheduled procedure:
- A list of all medications you currently take (including supplements)
- Names of all physicians and specialists you see regularly
- Any history of adverse reactions to sedation or anesthesia
- Any history of narcotic use
If you take routine oral medications, contact us before your surgical date for specific instructions on whether to take them the morning of your procedure. In most cases, you should take your medications as prescribed unless instructed otherwise.
Important: Let us know right away if you develop any illness before your surgery, such as a cold, sore throat, or stomach upset. We may need to reschedule your appointment to ensure your safety.
Preparing Your Body
Your stomach must be empty for IV sedation to be administered safely. Follow these guidelines:
- Hydrate well the day before your procedure
- Do not eat or drink anything (including water) for at least eight hours before your appointment
- Stop smoking at least 12 hours before surgery
- If possible, reduce or quit smoking entirely in the days leading up to your procedure for better healing
The Day of Surgery: Final Preparations
Fasting Reminders
- No food or drinks (including water) for at least eight hours before your appointment
- No smoking for at least 12 hours prior to surgery
What to Wear
Choose comfortable clothing that allows our team easy access for monitoring:
- Loose fitting clothing with sleeves that can roll up past the elbow
- Flat, low heeled shoes for stability after sedation
What to Remove or Avoid
Please remove or avoid the following so we can properly monitor you during sedation:
- Contact lenses
- Jewelry
- Dentures or removable dental appliances
- Lipstick and heavy makeup
- Nail polish and acrylic or fake nails
Arranging Your Transportation
This is essential: A responsible adult must accompany you to our office, remain in the waiting area during your entire procedure, and drive you home afterward. This person should also be available to review your post-operative instructions with you, since you may feel groggy after sedation.
After Your Procedure: Important Restrictions
For the first 24 hours following sedation:
- Do not drive a vehicle
- Do not operate heavy machinery or power tools
- Do not make important decisions or sign legal documents
For the first 36 hours following sedation:
- Do not consume alcoholic beverages
- Do not take tranquilizers or sleeping pills unless specifically prescribed by our office
